Rental Program: How It Works (FAQs)

How is Bookbyte's Rental Program different from other rental companies?

  • With our Rental Program you receive two great benefits: a lower purchase price, and a 10% rebate when you return your textbook.

Why bother with Renting?

  • We at Bookbyte only recommend Renting to those savvy students who like to save money on textbooks, and who like to get paid a 10% rebate for returning their textbooks. We think you fit the bill perfectly.

How does it work?

  • You buy your textbook, use it,
  • and then return it to us for a 10% rebate on the purchase price. Renting is a hassle-free way to save money.

What are my payment options?

  • We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and debit cards. For added security, we use AVS (address verification system). The billing address you enter in your order must match the one your financial institution or credit card company has on file, or your payment will be declined and your order will be cancelled. For more information, contact your financial institution or Credit Card Company. We are unable to accept PayPal payment for Rental orders at this time.

How much is my rebate?

  • Your rebate is 10% of your purchase price. You get the rebate after you return your book in good condition by its return date.

How does free shipping work?

  • If your Rental order totals over $49.00 then your shipping is free. To earn the free shipping you must purchase at least $49.00 in textbooks shipped from Bookbyte in a single transaction.

When does my term begin?

  • Your term begins when your order leaves our warehouse.

What is the due date?

  • The due date is the date the textbook is due to be entered back into Bookbyte’s inventory. When you send it to us, please allow enough time to for your textbook to ship to and be processed by us.

Ready to return your Rental order?

  • Login to your account

  • Select Order History and change date range to 6 months
    • If they all have the same Due Date, Select Print Shipping Label
    • If they have different Due Dates, you will need to select View, and then select Print Shipping Label for each one separately
    • If the label that is generated indicates USPS Media Mail, please contact us via chat or customerservice@bookbyte.com so we can create the correct label for your return

  • Pack your textbooks tightly in a heavy-duty shipping carton. You do not need to ship them in the original box/packaging

  • Affix the label that was provided and take them to your nearest FedEx location

  • As soon as your order has been received, your rebate check will be mailed to you within one business day of processing your shipment

Need to know when your Rental order is due?

  • Login to your account

  • Select Order History and change Date Range to 6 months

  • Select View

Who pays for shipping the textbooks back to Bookbyte?

  • We do! We provide a prepaid FedEx return label when you're ready to return it.

Can I pick up my Rental order instead of having it shipped to me?

  • No. Rental orders may be shipped from various locations and are not available for pick-up.

Where do I find my free shipping label?

  • It is waiting for you in My Account. Simply print it, package your textbooks, affix the label to the top of the package, then take your package to your nearest FedEx location. Easy! And free! Please package your order carefully to prevent damage during shipment.

Why can't I rent all the textbooks you sell?

  • Rentals are such a great deal that we can only offer it on the selection of textbooks we have in our immediate inventory. The good news is we receive tens of thousands of textbooks daily and our inventory is updated constantly.

I have a discount code. Can I use it for a Rental?

  • No. Our Rental rates are so low that no other discounts are accepted.

What is the condition of the items offered through the Rental Program?

  • We will only send a book in Used or better condition. Supplements such as CD-ROMs or access codes may or may not be included.
    • New: book is in new condition
    • Like New: book is in almost new condition (no markings or wear on the book)
    • Good Used: book has minor wear and/or markings
    • Used: may include moderately worn cover, writing, markings, or slight discoloration
    • Please be courteous to the next student who may want to rent the same book by not highlighting or writing in it.
    • If your textbook is not returned to us in the same condition as it was when you received it, you will not receive your rebate.
    • If your textbooks are returned in a condition in which we are not able to sell them, they will be returned to you and the cost to purchase will be processed.
      • Excessive odor(s)
      • Excessive writing or highlighting
      • Torn, loose, stuck or missing pages
      • Stains or mold

Are you selling instructor or international editions?

  • We may substitute an instructor edition, which has the same contents as a student edition, if they are currently out of stock. We do not ship international editions for our Rental Program.

How will I receive my rebate?

  • Your rebate check of 10% of the purchase price will be mailed to you provided your textbook is returned in the same condition it was in when you received it.

When will I receive my rebate?

  • You will normally receive payment within two business days of Bookbyte receiving then entering your textbook into our inventory system.

Can I extend my term?

  • No. We will give you a seven-day grace period, after which we assume you’ve decided to keep your textbook.

What do I do if I decide to keep my textbook?

  • Let us know by emailing customerservice@bookbyte.com.

    Once your textbook is 20 days overdue we consider you to have purchased the textbook outright. Bookbyte then will charge you the difference of the list price and the Rental price, plus a $10.00 fee. This amount is different for each textbook and is identified to you during the checkout process.
